How to Fish
You are all familiar with this old adage: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. To that I add the "how-to" and allow me to use an old joke to illustrate it.
While individual ministry is important and will continue in the Kingdom, by itself it is inefficient. It is time to drop some dynamite into the pond no matter what the Warden (The Law, the Church) says. "Dynamite" is derived from the word "dunamis." Most of you know this and you think of dunamis as the miracle-producing power of the Holy Spirit. And that it is. But dunamis, Strong's #1411, is actually one of two words for virtue. The first word for virtue is Strong's #703. It describes virtue as a trait and comes from Strongs #730 which means, "manliness (valor), excellence, and praise and it comes from #142 which means "stronger for lifting, to bear up, to carry or lift up, to weigh anchor." The second word for virtue is dunamis, Strong's #1411 and it is a description of virtue as a power. It means "force, masculine power, ability, abundance, strength" and comes from #1410 which means "to be able or possible, to can-do." The virtue that flowed out of Christ was the dunamis, but the person that Christ was is Strong's #703, arete. We must be #703 before we can be trusted with #1411. God will not let kids play with dynamite. Fishing with dynamite is for men. You will notice that valor is attached to the meaning of Strongs #703. Valor and courage are Old Testament words and are used primarily in regard to trusting and having confidence in God in battle. Valor and courage are not used in the New Testament. Under the new covenant the word used is "boldness" and is to "frankly speaking." It is the boldness to preach and proclaim the truth. Valor and courage is "striking the rock." Boldness is "speaking to the rock." New Testament boldness is sincerely speaking out the truth of Jesus Christ into a dark world opposed to that truth. It is speaking in such a way that one's words, like Samuel's, do not fall to the ground. There are no exceptions to this call. All Christians are to speak and to do. We believe and we speak. We sing, we proclaim, we worship, we testify. We overcome by the Blood of the Lamb and the Word of our Testimony. The spoken, anointed word dropped into the seas of mankind causes an explosion of harvest. The test of manliness is to take one's place, provide leadership and speak up in the face of opposition. We are to proclaim the truth. Our tongue should be like a sword of lightning thrusting light into the dark world. The enemy's main tactic is always to silence the Christian. He would rather have control of our throat, tongue and lips than any other members of our body. Lucifer desires worship and if he cannot have it from the Christian he will work his hardest to keep the Christian from giving it to God. The question today is where is the man who fishes? Where is the man in the boat with the dynamite in his hand? |
